And The Best Way to Raise a Healthy Eater…

March 26th, 2008

A while back I blogged about “10 Tips for Raising Healthy Eaters — Even Away From Home.” Much to my chagrin, it occurred to me later that I had actually forgotten the most important tip.

Involve your kids in cooking. Teach them to cook. Or if that’s not your forte, sign them up for cooking lessons.

The sooner kids learn that food is a creative process – that it’s something you make, not something you get from a box – the sooner they’ll start to really appreciate food. This means they’ll naturally gravitate towards real, healthy food, as opposed to processed foods. (And yes, there’s plenty of processed organic food nowadays too!)

Have you taught your kids to cook? I can’t wait till they can do all the cooking! Works for me!

This is so true. I was wondering awhile back why my kids just poked at their breakfast, and I really go out of my way to make good, healthy breakfasts. No cereal at my house! On a whim one morning I invited them to crack the eggs and help scramble them, and they devoured the stuff.

Exactly – sometimes we forget how much kids WANT to help. It’s in their nature. We need to encourage that. I’ve taken some great parenting classes at the Parent Encouragement Program (http://www.parentencouragment.org). — Lynn

So true! My son was involved in all the cooking and general housework as soon as he showed the slightest interest and over the years we had many happy hours in the kitchen together. Once he reached his teens he used to like experimenting and often I’d come home from work to find he had cooked up another intersting creation for us

He turns 21 this month and still loves both cooking and also eating out

It is worth taking the effort to get kids to eat a good range of healthy foods by getting them involved
